Doris Included in Ireland Squad While McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad announcement news

Returning manager the Ireland coach has selected captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland team for the autumn internationals, but Joe McCarthy is absent.

The captain, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in the US on 1 November.

Second row Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash are also absent because of injury, while number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation following the Lions tour.

Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped player in the 34-player group, but Irish rugby authorities states new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "cover".

After playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous meeting, the team host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said Farrell, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly experienced squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again vie for the starting fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is remains available, with the two players set to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 selected with the coach deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced group of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at number 15.

Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the wins over Georgia and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has been in two of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games this season and featured in the second string's defeat by the English in Bristol previously.

McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who started all three Lions matches during the tour, is poised to deputise for the captain if the skipper does not regain fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The national team will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
