Multiple passengers and crew were hurt when a Delta Airlines jet originating in LA to Sydney experienced turbulence Friday morning.
The flight, numbered 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson stated. A number of the onboard staff sustained injuries.
The New South Wales Ambulance Service reported they treated a total of five people, and took a trio to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included spinal discomfort and head pain. The patients' ages ranged from their 30s to 70s.
This marks the latest incident of commercial jets being hit by atmospheric disturbance, with aviation specialists pointing out that global warming is a significant contributor.
There were 245 people and a crew of 15 on the wide-body jet, the official said, adding that the plane arrived "safely" at the airport at 06:48 local time on Friday morning.
Emergency responders said they were alerted just three minutes ahead of the plane arrived, and emergency vehicles were waiting on the tarmac.
The reasons turbulence is growing increasingly prevalent - and often stronger.
Last year, twenty-five passengers and crew sustained injuries when another Delta jet, on a route from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, experienced "significant" turbulence just two hours into the lengthy trip, and had to make an emergency landing.
Earlier this year, those on board on a certain international flight experienced a harrowing short but intense period of extreme instability. One passenger lost their life and numerous people sustained injuries, as unbelted passengers rose out of their seats and fell back down.
In-flight turbulence is not uncommon during flights, and while cases of rough conditions appear to be increasing, they are remained quite uncommon.
Research indicates that there are around 5,000 incidents of severe-or-greater turbulence each year, out of a sum of in excess of 35 million aircraft departures that are conducted globally.
Strong atmospheric disturbance is defined as when the vertical motions of a jet passing through disturbed air apply greater than 1.5g-force on your body - sufficient force to propel you from your seat if you did not have on a safety belt.
As a changing climate shifts atmospheric conditions, experts warn that flying could become more turbulent: warming trends and altered air currents in the upper atmosphere are projected to increase the frequency and intensity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
