Soccer's Top Goal-Getters with Initials XG and Most Contributions with Initials GA

A curious reader asks a pair of fascinating questions: “Who is the highest-scoring player with the initials XG?” and “Which athlete boasts the highest combined contributions among athletes with the initials GA?”

XG Standouts

Among the small group of men's players globally with the initials XG, a Greek midfielder notched 17 scores during his club career, along with three for Greece Under-21s. But, he falls short of the scoring exploits of Xhevdet Gela, who scored 44 times across every tournament, including the Europa League with clubs from Finland MyPa and Lahti. Unusually, during a period from 2019 to 2022, the forward was playing for a Finnish club while also coaching a fourth-tier team located 80km away. He came back to coach the club in January of this year, though not as a player.

Details on other XG players are limited. An Andorran defender never left the Andorran Primera Divisió, while a Spanish centre-back made a single game in the third tier. Xavier García did score one time in a qualifying match against the Cayman Islands. Geng Xiaofeng is possibly the most recognized footballer with XG, but as a goalkeeper, he did not trouble the goal count.

GA Greats

Regarding footballers with the initials GA, thousands have played worldwide. But if we filter it to those who have appeared in the global tournament, two figures rise above. Gerald Asamoah achieved 183 goals and assists (113 goals, 70 set-ups) over a lengthy career, though a lot of his later seasons were spent in lesser divisions. Yet the winner is Georgi Asparuhov. Nicknamed the Artist, he scored 150 times in 247 domestic matches and was deadly in continental competition for his club. He also scored his nation's first ever finals score in Chile at age 19. Asparuhov finished with 188 career strikes before his untimely passing in a car crash at age 28.

Perhaps his most famous strike was against England at Wembley in December. Beginning in his defensive end, he dribbled past the entire backline before slotting neatly into the bottom corner. Sir Bobby Charlton later reflected, “Players as skilled as him are not created every day.” In the late 90s, the Artist was voted the nation's greatest player over Hristo Stoichkov. We can only imagine how many more goals he would have ended up score.

Within the Premier League, the highest goals and assists among GA players is held by a former Aston Villa star with 108 (74 goals, 34 helpers).

The Hungarian Goal Query

“The top 10 scorers for the Magyars all concluded their careers in the 20th century,” observed Cameron McGlone. “What other countries lack a top-10 scorer who has featured in the 2000s?”

A dedicated researcher delivered the response: not a single one. “I’ve looked through every single national team history, I determined that there are no other teams lacking a top-10 goal producer who was active in the 21st century. Three countries – the Southeast Asian side, another Asian team, and Poland – have 8 of their top 10 dating back to the 1900s.”

Regarding the Indonesian squad, their third-highest scorer – a retired star – and fifth-highest scorer Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto each competed in the 2000s. Malaysia’s tied sixth scorer Safee Sali and number eight a current player likewise feature in the modern era.

The Polish national team's historical top goalscorer is a global superstar, who is still active and adding to his total. Another modern player is joint-ninth in the rankings. Some might say that the team of Niue have no scorers in the 2000s – actually, they have never scored at all in their two matches.

Mixed Kits in the Same Match

After a recent query about teams using parts of three various kits in one game, fans shared more examples.

Mike Morris notes that in Manchester United's infamous ‘grey shirts’ match against Southampton, they used dark shirts, white shorts from their primary strip, and white socks from no kit. They changed to their alternate jersey in the later period, meaning bits of four separate outfits.

Another example involved Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic in 1957. Unable to swap kits due to a conflict, they acquired blue shirts from a nearby club and wore them for an FA Cup tie. Apparently it was a lucky charm as they proceeded to enjoy their best ever cup run.

A London club had a rule in the 1960s that visiting sides could not wear the identical socks. Spurs frequently played at their ground in white jerseys with gold socks.

In 2013, Barnsley had to purchase Crystal Palace's yellow away kit from the club shop after the official deemed their own colors unsuitable. They retained their red socks, leading to taunts from the home fans.

Roger Kirby remembers a 90s match where a famous team wore a newly designed strip with very dark blue stripes. The opponents had to wear their blue change kit to avoid a clash.

A fan once inquired about unusual ways to decide matches or tournaments, citing a 50s showpiece in Europe that was determined on corners.

Can you help?

A follower points out that a player scored a three goals for Dunfermline in 2025, while his dad Andy Tod did the same in two decades prior. Are there any additional examples of a parent and child both netting a triple for the one club?

James Bolle observes that on a particular Saturday, 8 league fixtures took place in London, making up 19% of all English fixtures. Has there ever been a higher proportion of league games in a single city? Additionally, with several London teams playing at home, it was a very London-centric day.

Boris Cule writes about a famous club setting a top-flight record by winning 4 straight games with last-minute goals. Did any team ever 5 or more such wins in a row in the old First Division era or elsewhere?

A concerned supporter writes that both Steel City teams are struggling in the Championship. If they are relegated, it would be the initial time both have gone down in the same season. Has a city ever have this happen before? Also, which three demoted teams have had the tightest geographical spread?
